Cheerleaders out to crown Cheers Champ in Glasgow
GLASGOW'S High Schools will show their cheer power tomorrow (Wednesday, June 9) as they take to the floor in the hopes of being crowned Glasgow Schools Cheer Dance Champions.
The Scottish Claymores have joined forces with Glasgow City Council and the lottery funded New Opportunities PE and Sport Fund (NOPES) to take cheerleading and dance to all of Glasgow's High Schools in a bid to improve school attendance, divert from criminal activity and increase physical activity in young female pupils. The programme is about to finish its first year and has been a great success.
Tomorrow (Wednesday), groups who have been tutored by the Scottish Claymores Cheerleaders will show off what they've learned and compete against other schools from the city at the Kelvin Hall event from 12 noon.
Claymores Cheerleader Manager DEBBIE JACKSON is looking forward to seeing the progress of the pupils. She said: "Our scheme has had a great first year. Pupils have improved attendance, self confidence and have become more interested in school activities. Most of the pupils are new to dance and cheerleading and this is our way of showing them how much they have learned as well as creating a bit of school spirit."
And Claymores cheerleader HEATHER McBRIDE is delighted with the pupils' progress, "The pupils have organised themselves into groups, using what they've learned, and come up with their own routines, costumes and music. We hope they will continue to enjoy cheerleading and physical exercise long after high school."
