Claymores centre JIMOND PUGH believes the play of the offensive line will dictate the outcome of every game. "The offensive line is a key component to any team," Pugh explained. "Without good pass-protection or run blocking, skill players wouldn't be able to perform at their highest possible level of play. We are the guys that will provide the big lanes for running backs to break through as well as the time for quarterbacks to make the proper throws."
Over the past two weeks, Martino has implemented different combinations of players along the line in order to find the most efficient unit. But as Martino will tell you, that takes some time.
"You really need a group that works together on the offensive line," Martino said. "You may have two outstanding players, but if the group doesn't work together, then the line as a whole won't be nearly as effective. It takes some time to find out who is a good player and who isn't at a specific position. This week, we will finally have our line set and begin to work with them on developing one cohesive unit."
This year, the Claymores have a good group of big and strong offensive lineman, including guard CHAD WARD and tackle MARQUES OGDEN - brother of Baltimore Ravens All-Pro tackle Jonathan.
"We're big this year," said Martino. "The guards and tackles have more than enough size. The inside guys are very strong and they will be the success of our running game this season."
Ward, who holds the school record with a 733-pound squat at the University of Washington, will provide strength up front for the Claymores, while Ogden will use his family genes to his advantage as he looks to ward off would-be defenders from getting a hold of the prized quarterback.
"I think we have a lot of talent on the team this year," Ward said. "We have versatile players who can play guard, tackle and center. I think we will be a formidable offensive line when the season arrives and we are already well on our way."
Martino will continue to work with his talented offensive line for the final week of training camp and throughout the upcoming season. By mid-week, he will have established a line that will become a fixture in the offensive scheme for the Claymores during the upcoming season.
