Passing Camp - Day 2

Passing Camp - Day 2

From Ryan Moore in Tampa

  • During a clear, warm day in Tampa, Florida, the second day of passing camp took place at Dunedin High School with several onlookers nearby. Tuesday's practice featured solely quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers.

  • For the first time in training camp, Coach Bicknell had the players wearing shoulder pads, which provided some additional excitement for those who were watching from the stands. There were a few running back drills in place, which involved some minor contact with the wide receivers.

  • There were several plays of the day, including a spectacular diving catch by running back Ahmaad Galloway that got all the players fired up. Runner-up goes to some nifty catches made by returning Claymore, Scott Couper.

  • Practice ended rather early with players hitting the weights directly following the coach's huddle-up. WR Herb Haygood and QB Tom Arth spent quite a bit of time running some extra plays directly following practice in order to get their timing down on their routes before they headed to the weight room.

  • Wednesday will mark the first full squad practice when the defensive players join the rest of the team at Dunedin High School.

    QUOTES
    Head Coach Jack Bicknell
RE: Today's practice compared to the first day
"The first day, I think kids are quite apprehensive and tight. They hadn't worked out in awhile and we didn't throw it and catch like I had hoped we would. To tell you the truth, was a little worried when I left here last night. However today, we threw and caught everything. So, it's just a matter of stepping in and getting comfortable with one another. We still have routes that we haven't timed out yet, so there is a lot of work to do.But, there is enough talent out here to get it done."

    Wide Receivers Coach Perry Kemp
RE: What type of coaching has he been giving the players?
"Mainly just paying attention, being precise on their routes, getting their head around and concentrating on the pass. Right now, these guys are still thinking on what to do because they are still learning the system. It's important for them to really try and concentrate on the little things."

    RE: Chemistry
"The receivers are doing a lot better than I would expect considering it is only their second day on the field."

    RE: Talent
"The talent is great. They have great hands, they run precise routes and they are taking the information in really well. Right now, they are all around the same level. We'll see tomorrow when they have defenders on them who will stand out."

    QB Tom Arth
RE: First Impression of the receivers
"For the second day being out here, I think things are going great. The first day was kind of rough. We were getting a feel for one another and things weren't quite as smooth, but today, it's like a whole new team. We're a lot crisper and things seem to be running a lot more smoothly. I think there is a lot of talent out here. Everybody is working really hard. The receivers have a great understanding of what we (quarterbacks) are trying to do"

    WR Herb Haygood
RE: First couple day of practice
"I think it going good. All of the coaches are teaching us well. The coaches spend a lot of time making sure we know what we are doing out there on the field. That is the one thing I notice about these particular coaches, these are the first coaches I've been around in the beginning that just want to teach you no matter what. I'm very excited to be here. I think everyone here has a lot to prove and we're all looking forward to competing for a World Bowl ring."
