Cheerleaders join Pop Idol Darius in fight against crime
The Scottish Claymores Cheerleaders joined with Scots pop hero Darius Danesh to launch a brand new initiative against crime.![]() Heather, Vicky, Jacqueline and Elaine join Darius and 6-year-old Ben Lockhart to launch a new crimebusting initiative. |
Children making calls with information that helps the police will be rewarded with mobile phone top-ups as an incentive.
The initiative was launched in Easterhouse but will be implemented across Scotland with a poster campaign featuring 6-year-old Ben Lockhart from Rutherglen, urging young people to “make the call”. Roadshows will also tour schools around Scotland to spread the word.
The campaign also involves a national writing competition resulting in a book called Dream On and a mentoring scheme will also be set up for young people through schools and youth organisations.
Cheerleaders Heather, Vicky, Jacqueline and Elaine joined Darius for a photocall at the Dream On launch and were impressed with the initiative with the pop star’s enthusiasm for the project.
Said Jacqueline, “This is a fantastic idea. Kids can come forward anonymously and really make a difference in their neighbourhoods. It makes a better place to live for everyone.”
And Vicky added, “Darius was fantastic and it’s obvious he cares. He came to Glasgow specially to attend this launch and said he was happy to be able to give something back to the people who helped him get where he is today.”
Detective Inspector David Donaldson, national coordinator of Crimestoppers Scotland, said: "This campaign encourages people to pass on information and play their part in making communities safer, so they can go out with their friends without fear.
"All calls are anonymous so nobody has to worry about someone finding out. "We want to make the streets safer for young people. Children dream of a nice car, nice home, a nice area to live – we want to say they can have it.”
The Scottish Executive and the Royal Bank of Scotland are backing the scheme, donating a total of £100,000 to Crimestoppers Scotland.
