Claymores Kick Off Carnival attracts record number of players
Britain's biggest ever festival of American football, the Claymores Carnival of Youth Football, attracted over 300 players from 23 teams to Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow on Sunday, September 7 The event was held to mark the kick-off of the new NFL season and teams from Inverclyde, Grangemouth and Glasgow were triumphantThe Kick-Off carnival featured competition at two levels - flag and tackle. Flag football, open to youngsters aged 10 to 16, is the non-contact version of the sport while junior tackle, for youngsters aged 14 to 16, introduces some of the physical demands of the game.
The Inverclyde Raiders were crowned Scottish junior tackle champions, the Grangemouth Broncos teams were crowned Scottish cadet flag champions with the Kircaldy Bulls named Scottish youth flag champions, while the Glasgow Tigers were crowned Scottish junior flag champions.
Scott Couper, Scottish Claymores Grassroots Coordinator said: "The Claymores carnival was a great day and the teams taking part at flag and tackle level created a wonderful advert for youth football in this country.
"It was a terrific way to spend the day before the NFL action started for real later in the evening on Sky Sports.
"The number of participants in the Claymores Carnival was unprecedented, which shows how far the game has developed in Scotland in recent years. We will be hosting another event in October, this time for senior players, and we expect similar levels of interest."
