Scots Kids Down Germans in Euro Championships

SCOTLAND'S soccer players may have struggled to beat Germany in the European Championships - but our gridiron youngsters showed them just how it should be done.

The Great Britain flag football squad, with four Scots in their eight-man roster, have just returned triumphant from the European Championships in Bologna, Italy.

They won the event for the first time at under-16 level, defeating the mighty Germans 32-24 in the final to win after emerging undefeated from the group stages in the non-contact version of American football.

The Scots were led by team captain Jonathan Ewing of the Grangemough Broncos and also included club mate and defensive captain Steven Gianandrea, Jason Gillespie of the Inverclyde Raiders and William Winter of the Carluke Predators.

Scottish Claymores Grassroots Coordinator Scott Couper said: " Everyone involved in American football in the UK is very proud of the efforts of our young Flag football players. It really shows the development of the game in this country when we can go and defeat teams from countries where there are thousands and thousands of kids playing the game at club level. For half the kids on the squad to be Scottish is a testament to the hard work of all the volunteers involved at the amateur level "

A group of four Scots - Martin Clyde and Mark Winter of the Carluke Predators and David Ewing and James Muir of the Grangemouth Broncos - also represented the eight man GB squad at under 13 level.

The GB youngsters finished fourth of out six teams, defeating Switzerland twice in the group stages but losing out twice to eventual winners Germany.
